The off-putting padded-wall effect does not extend beyond the corridors in the Continental, where the rooms are pleasantly decorated. Some have high ceilings and some have views over the Grand Canal. The reception rooms are rather oppressive but there is a lovely little terrace on the Grand Canal. If the gushing service is not too much for you, this is definitely a step up from most three-stars near the station. Some of the rooms are a bit cramped, but there is an enchanting attention to detail. It's situated very near to Piazza San Marco, but off the main tourist street, down a little alley to a lovely outdoor courtyard where guests can have their meals, with a well (pozzo) in the middle. A big entrance door from the busy Strada Nuova leads you into the wonderful courtyard of this Venetian palazzo. The locanda (inn - often an upmarket pensione) is on the third floor and can be reached via a lift or, by the more energetic, via a wonderful wide and worn flight of stone stairs. There are only twelve rooms but all are spacious and individually decorated. A couple of the rooms have views over the Grand Canal to the Rialto Market, others over the roof-tops. The sign of the `sturgeon' (sturion in Venetian dialect) can be made out in Carpaccio's painting of the Miracle of the Cross in the Accademia. By the time this was painted in 1494 the hotel had already been open for business for two centuries, its strategic position by the Rialto bridge making it a favourite with visiting merchants. Today it is one of the best-value Grand Canal locations in the city - though only two premium-price rooms and the breakfast room actually look out over the big water; the others (and the entrance) give onto a quiet calle. Service is friendly and well- informed, and there is a small library of books on Venice available for guests. The only drawback is the lack of a lift. Book well in advance.
